The Archangel Michael

1726
Church of Santa Maria Assunta ("The Gesuiti"), Venice

Dressed as a Roman soldier, St. Michael the Archangel drives Satan out of Heaven. This is a typical way of picturing him. His weapon is most often a long spear and sometimes a sword; this image blends the two and adds an arrowhead at the point.

This is one of four statues of archangels flanking the east end of the nave. All are greater than life-size.
